THE BEGINNING OF THE MISSION IN THE HUMAN WORLD

Woopie and Nina landed in the Human World after receiving a message from Chuck.

Disappointment immediately wrapped itself around Woopie’s soul, and the despair of the animals here was almost overwhelming. But Woopie was determined to serve and save the pets of the Human World. This was his first mission on his own and his first time away from his family in Dog & Cat City. He was nervous, but he would not fail.

“I am born to serve,” he reminded himself. “Perhaps I am here to serve a larger purpose.”

The message he had received from Brock had seemed simple. “The pet dogs in the Human World need your help,” it began. But when he witnessed the tragic situation of the pets in the Human World, he realized that the message had not even begun to convey the grief and misery the pets felt.

Trying to focus on the task at hand, Woopie and Nina began looking for Chuck, the dog who had contacted Woopie at his home in Dog & Cat City and attempted to explain the miseries that pets in the Human World faced. As they searched, Woopie and Nina noticed pain all around them. Dogs and cats roamed the streets with no home. Children made a game of kicking cats, oblivious to the terror they were causing for the poor animals. Nina even saw a wounded dog puking in the street with nobody to help him.

Some animals seemed to be healthy physically, but they roamed the streets barking and circling aimlessly. Woopie realized that many animals were not just suffering physically – their mental health was also being affected.

“The Human World can be so inhumane. I thought that people loved animals,” Nina said with a sigh as tears rolled down her cheeks.

THE SITUATION IN CENTRAL PARK

“Please, we need your help. We are on the brink of death, and we need a superhero to save us.” The message rent Woopie’s heart.

The email was from Archie, another pet in the Human World. After being completely disappointed by the Human World’s pet organizations, Archie had decided to seek help from Woopie, the Pet Savior of Dog & Cat City. Archie had once been a liason between pets and humans, but due to his declining health he was no longer able to get other pets the help they needed. When he heard that Woopie had come to their planet, he siezed the chance to do something for the woe-stricken community of dogs and cats.

Everyone still looks to me for help, but without help from the humans, there is nothing I can do for them. Woopie looked up from his phone with tears in his eyes. He vowed to help these pets no matter what. Chuck decided to join their team for a little while too – he knew every nook and cranny of the Human World and could help Woopie reach every pet possible.

“I think we should contact the pet organizations of the Human World,” Nina suggested.

“It won’t help,” Chuck replied despondently. Despite Chuck’s prediction, Woopie tried to call every pet organization he knew of.
Nobody answered. He didn’t give up, though. Woopie gave Chuck his super dog costume so they could all fly. Chuck guided Woopie and Nina to Central Park. With his cape fluttering in the air, they arrived just before sunset. Archie saw Woopie, Nina, and Chuck as they flew over the park and waved at them. The trio landed gracefully.

Archie was extremely heart-stricken and immediately began to tell Woopie all of his concerns.

“You are my last hope,” Archie told Woopie.

“Don’t worry, we are here to make things right. Tell me exactly what the dogs and cats of the Human World are going through,” Woopie said gently.

Archie burst into tears and called all the dogs and cats of his city. The pets were suffering from severe mental and physical disorders, and there was no one left to listen to their woes. Even though some of the pet organizations wanted to help, they had limited resources. Archie had once brought ailing pets to a doctor who would help them, but he claimed he could no longer do even that because of his deteriorating health. Woopie sensed that he was not telling the whole truth, but he didn’t press the issue as Archie was clearly genuinely distraught over the situation the pets were in.

As Woopie watched, throngs of cats and dogs came into Central Park. He noticed that all the pets were covered in fleas. Some struggled to even walk as they could barely go a few seconds without scratching their bodies. The untreated fleas were causing wounds and non-stop bleeding. With every passing moment, the infestation was spreading, causing widespread panic among the pets of the Human World.

Many of the pets were becoming so discouraged and frustrated that they were experiencing mental problems as well.

“There was,” Archie said sadly. “Dr. Silwokia. He was my human, and together we treated the wounds and illnesses of countless pets.

But he is on his death bed and can’t help pets anymore. Now the pets of this planet are suffering badly.”

As he stood in the park and looked into the eyes of the pets gathered before him, Woopie made a promise. He was going to save them from the fleas, no matter what it took.

“A medicinal chewing gum would help,” Woopie thought. But to make the gum, he needed a laboratory. He asked Archie if he knew of one.

“Dr. Silwokia has a small laboratory,” Archie replied, “but the keys were taken from him when his health prevented him from making his loan payments. Now the bank has the keys, and they won’t listen to anyone.”

Woopie was determined to try, however, so the following day he went to the bank and explained the plight of the pests to the president.

“There are other doctors who can treat them,” the president told Woopie coldly.

“I can help them. I just need access to the laboratory,” Woopie pleaded.

The president didn’t take Woopie’s words seriously and refused to hand over the laboratory keys. Woopie left the president’s office feeling defeated.

NUTRITIOUS TREATS FOR AILMENTS

But as he closed the door, a young woman waved him over to her desk.

“I’m the president’s assistant,” she said quietly. “I heard your conversation, and I recognize your costume from stories my grandmother used to tell me when I was little.

Here,” she said, offering an envelope to Woopie.

Woopie thanked her and left the bank. He told Nina what had happened and handed her the envelope without looking at it.

“Now what?” Woopie asked dejectedly as he sat down on the curb.

“Now we go to the laboratory and make the cure,” she said as she pulled a small key out of the envelope.

Woopie jumped up, his mood instantly improved. Following Archie’s directions, they headed to the laboratory to produce Woopie’s special chewing gum. For the next three days, Woopie and Nina worked without rest. They produced thousands of doses of the medicial gum that had saved the pets of Dog & Cat City many years earlier.

“We have done it!” Woopie cheered as he ran out of the laboratory. In his sleep- deprived state, he quickly tripped over his own feet and fell flat on his face, but even that did not diminish his excitement.

Woopie and Nina ran back to the waiting pets. When they saw Woopie with a cure for their fleas, they all clapped and excitedly took a piece of chewing gum.

But the results were not what Woopie had expected. The chewing gum didn’t seem to have any effect on the pets of the Human World. Woopie double-checked his formula; it was exactly the same as he had learned in Dog & Cat City. Not knowing what to do next, Archie took Woopie to see Dr. Silwakia.

“The pets’ genes are different here,” Dr. Silwakia whispered after Woopie explained what had happened. He didn’t have the strength to say any more, but it was enough. Woopie understood what he needed to do.

He returned to the laboratory began experimenting to make a new medicine to treat the fleas of pets in the Human World. It wasn’t easy, but Woopie did his best. He spent the whole night thinking about the formula, and the next day he prepared it and offered it to a dog. It didn’t do anything.

After three failed attempts, Woopie decided to try a completely new formula. It contained several organic vitamins and a pinch of wild herb. Woopie was hesitant to test it on any pets yet because he was still very unsure of the outcome. But Suzu, a little cat with more fleas than anyone, offered herself for the experiment.

“It might take your life,” Woopie told her, still afraid to let her try it.

“But it might save the lives of thousands pets,” Suzu replied.

Inspired by her positivity, Woopie gave her a tablet. Woopie couldn’t sleep the whole night; the results would be not visible for twelve hours. The following morning, Suzu woke up and, to everybody’s surprise, her fleas were gone! A single dose of the unique product had perfectly healed all her wounds, leaving not even a single scar on her body.

“It’s a flea treat!” Suzu exclaimed, bouncing with joy. Archie, Chuck, Suzu, and Nina hugged Woopie tightly. Then, after making as many of the new medicine as they could, they all went to Central Park with bags full of Woopie’s unique product, affectionately named “Flea Treats” by Suzu. All the pets patienty waited their turn as Woopie gave each a Flea Treat according to their weight and size. Most pets received one or two treats, but Charlie was a great dane – he received a dozen doses!

With high hopes, great excitement, and a peace they hadn’t felt in months, all the pets returned to their homes and slept better than they ever had. The next morning, they all woke up with woundless and flea-free bodies. The Human World resounded with the pets’ joyful cries. They all gathered in the park once more and thanked Woopie for his help.

Standing in front of the crowd with one ear standing up and the other lying down (as they always did), Woopie realized he had become the hero of the pets of the Human World.

AN UNUSUAL DREM

Out of the corner of his eye, Woopie saw the woman who had helped him at the bank approaching. “I’m so glad you lived up to your reputation, superhero,” she said with a smile. “Would you be willing to help more pets in need?”

Woopie and Nina immediately agreed, and she led them to the pet asylum, which was home to hundreds of homeless pets. The sight that met them when they entered was miserable. There were elderly cats and dogs who were little more than walking corpses.

Some of the younger pets were biting at invisible flies while others wandered in aimless circles. The staff did what they could to help, but most of the pets showed no signs of recovery.

When the staff at the asylum saw Woopie enter with Allison (Woopie had learned the young woman’s name on their trip to the asylum), they welcomed him as if a god had come to answer their prayers.

“What happened to these pets?” Woopie asked Clive, whom Allison had introduced as the director of the asylum.

“Depression has taken hold of many of them. They have lost their senses after losing their loved ones or other traumatic experiences. Many of them die every day because they refuse to eat anything except cream pies. And we can’t afford enough cream pies to keep them all fed. We have tried everything, but it has all been in vain,” Clive explained.

Woopie toured the whole asylum and saw that all of the pets were totally out of sorts. When they reached the last corridor, Woopie saw the dark cages where some of the dogs and cats were imprisoned. The dogs were barking angrily and the cats were meowing furiously while trying to claw their way out of the cages. Clive told Woopie that these were the most mentally disturbed and frustrated pets. They had been so traumatized that they would sometime attack their fellow pets in the asylum; that’s why they had to be kept all alone.

Woopie could relate to their loneliness in a small way. Woopie was currently living away from his parents for the first time in his life. He could imagine what it would be like to have permanently lost a loved one or to have no hope of getting back to one’s family.

Woopie and Nina were deeply grieved by everything they saw. They promised Clive they would come back as soon as they had devised a cure for these pets.

“Nina, I want to cure them at any cost,” Woopie said as they returned to the laboratory. “I have a huge responsibility on my shoulders, but I don’t know what to do. I have never cured mental problems like these before.”

“Don’t let the pressure get to you. If anyone can do it, you can. And I am with you to help you,” Nina said. Her encouraging words were enough to get Woopie started as soon as they reached the laboratory, but he still didn’t know where to start. Woopie had never faced mental illness before – it was very rare on his home planet. He had always treated pets’ physical injuries and wounds. He lay on the floor that night and looked up at the stars. Woopie missed Dog & Cat City. He missed his parents and his own room too. Bt he reminded himself that he was doing something remarkable, and that brought him peace.

Before he fell asleep, Woopie asked the ancient dog king to give him wisdom. That night Woopie had a very unusal dream. He saw the dog king standing on the peak of a snowy mountain picking red flowers.

The flowers instantly brought a smile to the dog king’s face, and as he inhaled their scent, he was filled with calmness.

Woopie woke up with a start around midnight. Nina was sleeping nearby, and he shook her awake. After he narrated his unusual dream to her, they both knew what they had to do. Without delay, Woopie dressed in his orange costume and flew to Chuck’s house.

“Chuck! Chuck! I need to go to the snowy mountains. It’s an emergency,” Woopie panted.

“Right now?” Chuck asked drowsily.

“Yes,” Woopie said. “I know how to cure the pets’ depression.”

The three friends began their journey. After flying for hours, they alit on the highest peak of the snowy mountains. It was the same mountain that Woopie had seen in his dream.

Woopie asked Nina and Chuck to collect all the red flowers they could find. Chuck didn’t understand the purpose of this, but he trusted that Woopie had a great reason for it. Soon they had picked thousands of flowers.

They dropped Chuck off at his house on their way back to the laboratory. As soon as they arrived, Woopie and Nina began experimenting with the flowers. There had to be something in these flowers they could use to create a unique product to calm the frustrated pets. While he tried different combinations, Woopie asked Nina to bake cream pies since that was all the pets in the asylum would eat. Once Woopie found the perfect combination of vitamins and crushed flowers, he added the concoction to the hundreds of cream pies that Nina had baked.

After working for three days, Woopie called Clive. The treats were ready, but he needed help getting them to the asylum.

Clive sent all their vans and workers to help Woopie bring the treats to the frustrated and depressed pets. Each pet would be served a cream pie with a treat dose that was appropriate for his weight and size. The pets imprisoned in the cages were given a double dose of the calming treats due to their critical condition.

While serving the cream pies, the workers realized that they were going to run out of calming treats soon. They ran to Woopie and told him the bad news.

Without wasting a millisecond, Woopie and Nina ran back to the lab and began producing more calming treats. When they returned with enough to meet the pets’ needs, the staff at the asylum was astonished by the results they were already seeing. Even the most hopeless of the dogs and cats seemed to be coming back to their senses and returning to normal. The asylum was turning into the happiest place in the Human World.

Soon Woopie’s calming treats were being distributed in every corner of the Human World, and mental issues in pets were all but eradicated.

But Woopie didn’t get to enjoy his success for long. Suddenly his phone rang.

5 PART

GLORY TO THE SUPERHERO WOOPIE

“You’ve done amazing things in the Human World, Woopie, and I’m very proud of you,” his mom told him when he answered. “But you need to come back now. You only have two days left before you will be stuck in the Human World forever!” Woopie suddenly remembered that his spaceship would lose connection with Dog & Cat City after a certain number of days. He didn’t realize he had been gone for so long already!

But his mom was right, of course. And in spite of all their great accomplishments, Woopie and Nina were excited to get back to their world. Woopie was thankful to have had the opportunity to serve his purpose in the Human World and save thousands of pets.

They flew toward the laboratory one last time, planning to sleep there before returning the key and departing the next morning.

“Ugh, such a foul smell,” Nina said, covering her nose with her paws.

Woopie looked down. They were on the outskirts of the city, away from the streetlights, and the night was dark. Woopie took his torch out of his pocket. He saw pools of vomits and streams of urine in the streets below. When Woopie and Nina landed, they saw the full extent of the problem. There were pets suffering from nausea, diarrhea, and uncontrollable urination.

It was hard for Woopie and Nina to stay there even for a moment. They saw patches of grass all over the countryside turning brown from the excess nitrogen in the pets’ urine.

Woopie asked several of the pets who took care of them, but they were either too ill to.

The next day, Woopie and Nina reached Dog & Cat City and docked their spaceship. There would be no slipping in quietly here, though. A huge crowd had gathered to welcome them home. Word of their heroics in the Human World had traveled quickly. Woopie guessed that he had his mom to thank for much of that, but he didn’t mind. He was just glad to be home.

“We are so proud of you both!” Woopie’s mom exclaimed as his parents rushed forward to hug them. “Come on home; I’m sure you’re hungry. I’ll make your favorite dinner.”

After ensuring that Nina was reunited with her family as well, Woopie followed his parents through the crowd, graciously accepting everyone’s praise as he went.

After a delicious dinner, Woopie happily curled up in his own bed. He didn’t realize just how much he had missed it. But as he closed his eyes and began to drift off to sleep, a thought came to him.

“I won’t be able to go back to the Human World for some time,” he thought. “And

though the pets there are in much better shape now, they will get sick again. They will experience loss again.”

He wrestled with this realization for several minutes before the solution hit him. All it had taken was a simple email to bring him to the Human World. And while he could not go back anytime soon, there were always spaceships traveling all throughout the galaxy. With his worries calmed, Woopie rested his head on his paws and fell asleep while thinking about the design for the website he would make to sell his treatments to any pet on any planet at any time.
